Frequently Asked Questions

Do you teach adults?
Yes! I teach all ages from 8 years old and up.

How much are your classes?
It depends on what type of class you take.  Please see Classes for prices.

Do you need any experience to sign up for your classes?
Nope! No experience necessary. My classes are designed for absolute beginners. Many students don't have their own machines or haven't even taken their new sewing machine out of the box before they take a class with me. I also have students with some knowledge of sewing, but want a refresher, or need help understanding how to read a pattern, or finishing a project.

Do I need to bring my own machine?
No. In fact, all the group classes, we use the classroom sewing machines and I ask that you keep your personal machine at home. This keeps classes running smoothly and fairly so that I don't spend class-time troubleshooting a student's machine that I'm not familiar with. If a student would like to learn how to use their own machine, we can schedule a private lesson.

When do your classes meet?
Introduction to Sewing classes meet once per week on an assigned day from October to May.

Can I sign up anytime?
Yes! New students registration is open to start the first week of every month. Everyone works at their own pace, so you can join us anytime throughout the year.

What will I learn in class?
  • Sewing safety
  • Parts of a sewing machine
  • Names of useful sewing tools and how to use them
  • How to sew a straight line
  • How to turn corners
  • How to sew curvy seams
  • How to read patterns
  • Simple Alterations (hemming pants, taking in garments that are too big, etc...)

What type of projects do kids learn to sew?
For the kids classes we use a combination of the "Kids Can Sew" curriculum, my patterns and patterns that the kids design. Projects include: shorts, pjs, shirts, skirts, shorts, stuffed animals, bags, and more. Check out the gallery to see what the kids are making! The Kids Can Sew Pattern Books are required for all students and available for purchase at time of registration.

What type of projects do Adults learn to sew?
Adults use a combination of Choly Knight's book, "Sew Me! Sewing Basics: Simple Techniques and Projects for First-Time Sewers" my patterns, and commercial patterns/projects of their choice.  Choly Knight's book is required for all students and available for purchase at time of registration.
